On September 11 and 12, over 100 Section and Branch Presidents, Region Governors, Society Directors, Presidential Officers, and Institute and Institute Chapter Leaders from around the world participated live, as well as virtually, in the 2022 Presidents and Governors Forum. Past Branch Presidents’ Appreciation Day – 33 Years of Excellence

Press Release

October 10, 2017 – The Montgomery Branch of the Alabama Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers dedicated the October Branch meeting to recognizing the leadership and volunteerism of each of its former Branch presidents. Those leaders, during their time with the Branch, put forth great effort to uphold and enhance the integrity and ethics of the civil engineering profession, while serving engineers and the community in the River Region. By way of our past presidents, the Branch has been able to foster professional interaction between students, younger members, and experienced professionals as well as instill enthusiasm in the profession and Branch membership and involvement.

The Montgomery Branch of ASCE was established in 1984 with 30 original members, and several of these charter members were on hand to witness the recognition of our past presidents. Thirty-three years later, the Branch continues to be a highly active professional organization within the River Region, largely due to the efforts of these honored individuals. According to Mr. Brian Felder, 2009 Branch President, “It was an honor to be recognized with so many leaders in the ASCE community.

In my current job, I have the opportunity to attend and present to ASCE branches throughout Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana, and I can honestly say that the Montgomery Branch is the most organized, well run, and impactful of all of them”. The Montgomery Branch would like to once again thank each of its former presidents for their service and sacrifice to the Branch, ASCE, and the civil engineering profession. As often quoted, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

According to the Director of ASCE Geographic Services, Mrs. Nancy Berson, the Branch website set a high standard of excellence for user interface design by creating a seamless experience for end-users, which has allowed for website activity to increase over 1100% in just two and a half years.

Mr. Brad Williams, Montgomery Branch President and Webmaster, represented the Branch at the awards ceremony. The award was presented during the 2017 Regions 1, 2, 4, and 5 Multi-Region Leadership Conference on Saturday, January 21 at the Newark Liberty International Airport Marriott in Newark, NJ.  The 2017 President Elect, Kristina L. Swallow, P.E., ENV SP, F.ASCE., presented the award.

The Branch website has been integral to connecting our members with each other and the Alabama Section and also providing updates and information from the Society.

On February 14, 2002 the Alabama Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers conducted a state-level high school student competition using the West Point Bridge Designer 2002 for a nationwide competition sponsored by the U.S. Military Academy and American Society of Civil Engineers. In the nationwide competition, there were over 47,000 bridge designs that were entered in the competition that ended on Feb. 28, 2002.Each team had to design a two span continuous deck truss bridge with a low concrete pier, 40m bridge length with spans of 16m and 24m with all members initially of the same material, section and size. Teams were required to do their own work with no collaboration with anyone outside the team. Each team had a maximum design time 30 minutes, and they couldn’t make any changes to structure geometry (adding/deleting/moving joints/members), but any or all members could be modified for material, section and/or size. The winner was based on the least total cost.

There were five teams in the state of Alabama competing for the top prize. The high schools represented were West End High School of Walnut Grove, Grissom High School in Huntsville, Tuscaloosa Academy, Montgomery Academy and Holy Spirit Academy in Tuscaloosa. Montgomery Academy took first place in the event. They were represented by Hunter Schloss and Bart Smith with Melissa Anderson as the sponsor.
